Women's Shelter Plagued With Bed Bugs Infestation

Thursday, July 3, 2008 – updated: 11:42 pm EDT July 3, 2008

A tiny bug is a big and costly problem for a local shelter.

The United Family Services Shelter for Battered Women and Children is infested with bed bugs.

The 26 people who were staying there are being put up elsewhere. While they're away, shelter workers are going through the process of replacing the floors and the furniture.

"We have been open thirty years next year, and we have never had this problem until this spring," said Jane Taylor with the United Family Services shelter.

The unexpected problem has cost $10,000 so far. Workers emphasize they're still accepting people despite the problem.

The shelter can only accept money because any donated furniture could bring the chance of more bed bugs.

To find out how to donate, call United Family Services at 704-332-2513.
